UK Expands Methanol Toxicity Alert List with 11 Nations
The UK Foreign Office has placed 11 more nations to its travel warning roster regarding the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from tainted spirits.
The revised travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol poisoning.
Just a few weeks ago, authorities had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after a number of serious cases including the deadly demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol commonly employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.
While it is inherently formed during the creation of spirits, commercial firms bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the distillation process.
Yet in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Government Guidance for Travellers
Government representative a senior official said that all travellers should be aware of the signs of methanol toxicity.
"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, choose trusted places and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the minister warned.
"In case something feels off, for example a hangover that's far more intense than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention fast."
The full roster of destinations listed as carrying a threat of methanol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
