‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?
Light therapy is definitely experiencing a moment. There are now available glowing gadgets designed to address dermatological concerns and fine lines to muscle pain and oral inflammation, recently introduced is a dental hygiene device enhanced with miniature red light sources, marketed by the company as “a major advance in personal mouth health.” Worldwide, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, where instead of hot coals (real or electric) heating the air, the infrared radiation heats your body itself. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, boosting skin collagen, easing muscle tension, reducing swelling and chronic health conditions as well as supporting brain health.
Understanding the Evidence
“It appears somewhat mystical,” observes a Durham University professor, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Naturally, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, essential for skeletal strength, immune function, and muscular health. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, too, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Sunlight-imitating lamps are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to combat seasonal emotional slumps. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.
Various Phototherapy Approaches
Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. In serious clinical research, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, extending from long-wavelength radiation to short-wavelength gamma rays. Phototherapy, or light therapy utilizes intermediate light frequencies, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and finally infrared detectable with special equipment.
UV light has been used by medical dermatologists for many years for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. It works on the immune system within cells, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” says Dr Bernard Ho. “Considerable data validates phototherapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “tend to be a bit more superficial.”
Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance
The side-effects of UVB exposure, like erythema or pigmentation, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – which decreases danger. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, so the dosage is monitored,” says Ho. Essentially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – different from beauty salons, where oversight might be limited, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”
Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty
Red and blue LEDs, he says, “aren’t typically employed clinically, though they might benefit some issues.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, enhance blood flow, oxygen utilization and cell renewal in the skin, and stimulate collagen production – a primary objective in youth preservation. “The evidence is there,” states the dermatologist. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. We don’t know the duration, proper positioning requirements, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Numerous concerns persist.”
Treatment Areas and Specialist Views
Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, a microbe associated with acne. The evidence for its efficacy isn’t strong enough for it to be routinely prescribed by doctors – despite the fact that, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he says, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. Without proper medical classification, oversight remains ambiguous.”
Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes
At the same time, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, revealing various pathways for light-enhanced cell function. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he says. Multiple claimed advantages have created skepticism toward light treatment – that it’s too good to be true. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.
Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, however two decades past, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he explains. “I was pretty sceptical. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, that many assumed was biologically inert.”
The advantage it possessed, though, was its efficient water penetration, enabling deeper tissue penetration.
Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health
Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, producing fuel for biological processes. “Every cell in your body has mitochondria, even within brain tissue,” explains the neuroscientist, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is consistently beneficial.”
With 1070 treatment, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In limited quantities these molecules, says Chazot, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”
Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: free radical neutralization, anti-inflammatory, and pro-autophagy – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
